Makiko Sakurai, a musician, an Aikido teacher, Buddhist Shomyo chanter, took the night train to Sensei’s home at Yamma village where I was a guest for a few weeks. It was the summer after the Tsunami.
As we shook hands and nodded she said: “I am interested in sound before it becomes music.”
– “Oh, and I am interested in materials before they become art.”
From time to time, she searched in her Japanese – Hebrew dictionary. Diwan Music brought her all the way to study with Gila Bashari in Israel.
Whenever she could not express what she wanted, she imitated our Israeli body language.
I felt at home and at the same time saw myself from the outside.
